Story

When winning wasn’t enough.

After winning gold and setting a world record at the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics, Lachlan Jones stood at the peak of his sport.

But what followed was not recognition, it was resistance.  As his dominance grew, so did the discomfort around it. Classifications were changed. Standards were rewritten. Opportunities disappeared.  What should have been the continuation of a remarkable career became something else entirely: a fight for fairness, dignity, and the right to compete.

Too Good to Win is the astonishing true story of Lachlan Jones, an Australian Paralympic champion, whose triumphs on the track pale against the adversity, discrimination, and political manipulation he faced behind it.

After his gold medal and world record performance at the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics, Lachlan’s rise was expected to continue. Instead, international sporting authorities began altering rules and classifications to ensure that “such a margin of victory” would not disrupt their preferred public image. When the IPC changed the qualifying standards to make Lachlan’s events impossible to contest, and officials denied him basic rights such as a blind guide, his story shifted from celebration to an extraordinary fight for justice.

Told through the eyes of father and coach, Greg, it follows Lachlan’s career until his retirement from racing in 2006. This is a story about an imperfect system, a father’s fight, a son’s resilience, and the indomitable power of human will. Too Good to Win is more than a sports biography: it is a testament to dignity, perseverance, and the power of fighting for what you believe in.

Told through the eyes of his father and coach, Greg, Too Good to Win is not just a sporting story — it is a deeply personal account of advocacy, persistence, and the cost of standing up to a system that refuses to listen.
